Testimonials from trainees who benefited from the skilling projects

I dropped out of school in primary three. I was

18 years old. With my age children mocked me. I was a slow learner besides my
disability. My father too had school fees challenges educating all of us. Now
that I have been trained in tailoring, I am going to be employed and start
earning and catering for my own needs. Thanks to NUDIPU and partners, with the additional skill courtesy of the training in tailoring, at least, I
cannot sit and wait to be supported. Thanks for the tailoring machine, this is a
starting point for me and I hope to expand my business,”

Omar Morris trained at Daniel Comboni Vocational Training Institute in Gulu.  He narrates that he got to know about the training opportunity through the isave group he is part of in Oyam supervised by NUDIPU.

In addition to being a farmer, he decided to train in metal fabrication to supplement his earning opportunities.

“When I’m not in the garden I know I will be at my workshop. I have got start-up capital now. I am also going to train my siblings so that when I’m not at the workshop to serve people, they can be around  support.  Being self-employed has elevated our dignity and status in the community that used to mock us.” shares Omar

Despite dropping out from school in  Primary seven, all has not been lost for Ms Oramas Aida’s son from Lungula sub-county, Nwoya District. The son has a hearing impairment. After years of sitting at home with no hope of being self-employed or having something to do his own, the skills training came in handy for him. He joined Daniel Comboni Vocational Training Institute and was determined to learn what was being taught to him to sharpen his skills in carpentry. This was the only opportunity for him to liberate himself financially and be independent.

“I can’t believe my son who people ridiculed because of his disability is going to be employed with his workshop. Our children have been empowered we can’t ask for more but to support them to flourish in their ventures and also identify potential clients for them,” shares Ms Orama.
