Project Objectives

  • Women and men with disabilities and other marginalized groups are actively participating in local CSOs/DPOs programmes.
  •  Local and inclusive CSOs/DPOs are actively involved, legitimate and have more ownership in lobby and advocacy processes at all levels and are able to influence the gender and disability sensitive Local Inclusion Agenda and improve equal rights and access to basic resources for all.
  • Local public authorities are actively engaging with DPOs/CSOs to develop laws and practices and set norms for inclusive governance.
Project Goal

By 2025, through engagement with public authorities (formal and informal power holders), men and women with disabilities and other marginalized groups, are successfully influencing laws, policies, practices and norms for improved food security for all.

Brief Project background including achievements

We are Able! Program seeks to have Persons with Disabilities improve their rights to land and food security and livelihoods through creating an enabling environment for action at grassroot level. In Uganda; the program is being implemented by consortium of six (6) organizations namely: – African Disability Forum (ADF) through NUDIPU, Light for the World (LFTW), the Hague Academy (THA) and Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten International (VNGi) and ZOA as the lead. The main objective of WaA! is “Co-creating inclusive governance for access to basic resources that leaves no-one behind”. The program focuses on lobby and advocacy by and for the Persons with Disabilities and other marginalized groups to increase their access to basic resources such as land and food security.

Key achievements for 2021
  • Recruitment and induction of the 2 programme Assistants, 12 field promoters and 12 DU focal persons to support the iSAVE inclusive economic empowerment programme.
  • Held four inception meetings for WaA programme were held in Arua City, Nwoya, Omoro Yumbe districts and reached 108 (78 M and 32 F)
  • We conducted 7 sub county inception meetings in Opit, Lakwana and Ongako in Omoro and Koch Lii, Lungulu, Purungo and Koch Goma Sub counties in Nwoya. Reached 288 (188M and 80F)
  •  Procured and distributed the 2 Honda motorcycles, riding gears and boots to Omoro and Nwoya districts.
  •  Held 24 parish dissemination meetings were conducted on iSAVE Model involving 880 (464 female and 416 male).
  •  5 training sessions were conducted for the 25 enrolled iSAVE groups on five (5) core iSAVE modules. Topics covered include; group leadership and election of leaders, constitution development, procedure of weekly group meeting, share purchases and management, group operations and procedure involving pay-ins procedures, social funds rules, loan rules and recordkeeping.
  •  Conducted 2 monitoring and refresher trainings for 34 participants (12 field promoters, 12 DU focal persons, 2 Programme assistants, 4 Local councillors for disability and helpers) at district levels. The monitoring team also visited the 4 verified groups in Omoro and Nwoya parishes to check their compliance with iSAVE mannual.

  •  Procured and distributed 4 mobile mifi, 3 laptop and desktop computers, 2 office desks, 2 filling cabins and 3 printers for the field offices.
  •  Held two district General Assemblies and established New District Unions of Persons with disabilities in Omoro & Terego.7 sub counties associations were also formed in Terego. Attended by 95 and 101 participants respectively
  • Trained 12 District Union Executive Committee members of Omoro district on financial management so as to enhance their capacity to lead the DU.
  •       Recruited the consultant to support the OCA process for NOPDs in relation to land rights advocacy, food security and livelihoods for persons with disabilities.
  •       Conducted three trainings with District /city Local Governments technical Heads from Arua city, Yumbe and Nwoya on disability inclusion and legal frameworks. Reached 63 participants (43 M and 20F).
  •       Procured and printed 4 pull ups to promote WaA programme when conducting the project activities on the ground and for visibility purposes.
