With every spark, Isaac Owiny brings new ideas to life, showcasing exceptional skill and dedication to the craft of welding, a skill he gained after our vocational skills training

Isaac is another youth who is very passionate about his job. He has a physical disability, but he has always been fascinated by the world of metalwork.
Growing up, he would often watch some of the welders creating intricate designs and functional pieces in his village.
Despite his physical disability, Isaac’s curiosity and passion for welding only grew stronger.

Discovering a new passion
Isaac did not go far in terms of education. National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda – NUDIPU, together with partners that are NUWODU and Challenges Uganda under the Ayim Maber (future is bright) project, with support from Sightsavers, gave an opportunity to youth with disabilities to participate in a vocational skills training in the districts of Oyam, Nwoya, Gulu, and Amuru, and Isaac was one of them.

Isaac is a youth from Oyam District. He decided to pursue a course in welding at a Gulu Vocational Training Centre. He was more determined to take advantage of this opportunity.

Overcoming challenges

At first, during the training process, all seemed difficult for him, especially when it came to measurements and coming up with new pieces and designs.
However, his determination and enthusiasm kept him going. He practiced tirelessly, honing his skills and building his confidence.

A newfound confidence
Upon finishing his training, Isaac got a start-up kit from NUDIPU and partners. During our M&E monitoring visit, we found that Isaac has started his own small business, creating custom metalwork pieces for clients. His unique perspective and attention to detail have quickly earned him a reputation in the local community.

Isaac’s story serves as an inspiration to others with disabilities, showing that with determination and the right support, anyone can turn their passion into a successful career.
He has indeed embraced the potential of welding as a career. He has started creating his projects, from decorative metal art to functional items like metal windows, doors, among others.

Empowering Others
Isaac’s journey has also empowered him to mentor others with disabilities who are interested in pursuing a skill like his.
We found one trainee who is hard of hearing that he was mentoring.
He has endeavoured to share his experiences, provide guidance, and encourage other trainees at his shop to explore their passions, just as he did.
