Enhancing digital skills for persons with disabilities: Many turn up to shape their technology skills

National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda and Eightech Consults Limited in partnership with Uganda Communication Commission, have started off the digital skills training for persons with disabilities in 35 selected districts.

The efforts being undertaken are aimed at promoting digital skills for persons with disabilities, especially the visually impaired and the deaf.

“The digital skills training for persons with disabilities is aimed at empowering persons with disabilities to join the digital revolution. To the host districts, give opportunity to persons with disabilities to learn new skills in technology that can benefit them,” shares Mr Baker Ssekito.

CPA Baker Ssekito from Eightech consults flagging off the trainers who are supporting the digital skills training to persons with disabilities.

“Thanks for training people with disabilities to adopt digital skills. Before, no one cared about them having these important skills for persons with disabilities,” shares Dr Busulwa Abdul.

To many like Dr Busulwa, they have succeeded due to exposure & want this to trickle to others.  The information gap among persons with disabilities, especially in the digital revolution, should be a concern. They need not to be left out to access information. The easiest and fastest way to get information in this era is through digital means as  compared to the traditional means as long as one is connected to the internet.

Dr Abdul Busulwa is a computer guru despite him being visually impaired. He uses assistive devices to access crucial information like any other computer user.

Mr  Banya Ojok is a visually impaired computer tutor during his training sessions in Mubende District, has been able to support the participants on how to use assistive technology on their phones and laptops.

So far the teams have moved to support persons with disabilities in Kabongo, Moroto, Mukono, Terego and Jinja, Soroti among others.
