NUDIPU works with UNBS to set standards for Special Needs Education

UNBS standards staff guide stakeholders in a consultative meeting to help them come up with regulations for Special Needs Education.

NUDIPU and Uganda National Bureau of Standards have convened a consultative meeting on Special Needs Education standards.

As NUDIPU, we need standards for special needs learners’ education is to minimise substandard education for learners with disabilities.

It has been our concern, especially regarding the quality of education being offered to learners with disabilities, as there were no uniform standards to guide their learning process.

NUDIPU has brought UNBS on board to support the process of regulating special needs education in Uganda.

According to Dr Alenyo Daniel, Senior Examinations Officer, Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) standards for Special Needs Education should have come yesterday. Picking a leaf from UNEB where work has been eased for them to roll out examinations following standards. Therefore, for special needs education, they need to see how standards can support them to ease implementation.

To Mr Mugisa Charles, from the Special Needs Department, Ministry of Education and Sports, the standards are important and thus their implementation process should also be enforced once they are formalised.
