With support from the Austrian Development Cooperation, under the Gender and Disability in Practice Phase II project, a monitoring visit was conducted in Kapchorwa District.
From our previous engagements with target schools under our inclusive education approach that we are pushing, we noted the increasing number of Children with disabilities who have enrolled for example from:
Kobil Primary School the number had increased to 46 from 30, Tegeres Primary School learners increased from 11 to 36 and Sipi Primary School the number was 27.
Teachers from the above-mentioned schools appreciated the mindset change they obtained after our trainings on supporting children with disabilities

The classroom blocks at some of the schools have been modified to ease movement for learners with wheel chairs
It has been observed that some schools have started making physical modifications for example at Sipi Primary School, a pathway that leads to the headteachers office has been levelled to ease access for learners with disabilities to move freely in the school environment.
Learners with hearing and visual impairment, in all schools have been made to sit at the front to enable their participation and easy learning.
Though a challenge was identified at Kobil Primary School where teachers here couldn’t did not know sign language to help a learner with hearing impairment to study. A peer learner was spotted as the learner knew some basic simple sign language to support the pupil with hearing impairment.
Some of the newly enrolled children with disabilities especially in Kobil were quite resistant when brought to school as they had never been to school and were not exposed to interacting with other children.
However, the head teacher noted that this is common in regard to enrolment of children in school, but after a few days, they loosen up and start enjoying school.
According to the school head teacher of Kobil Primary School many children with disabilities in the communities have been locked and hidden in homes and denied opportunity to go to school and thus calls upon NUDIPU to conduct more awareness raising activities on disability inclusion, rights of children with disabilities to also go to school and the role of parents in supporting to develop them.
